Our Research Methods

OUR APPROACH
We framed our research within the social-ecological model. This model examines the following levels that influence a person's health like individual, interpersonal, community, institutional, and policy. All of these levels are dimensions that can influence a person's health and well-being.
INTERVIEWS

Each student conducted individual interviews with various people in the community. Some examples of questions we asked were:

  • How do you think the community perceives addicted pregnant women?

  • Do you provide services for addicted pregnant women? If so, what services do you provide?

  • How does the opinion of the community affect local government's decisions on treatment centers?

Who did we interview?

  • Local community organizations in Delaware County that serve pregnant women

  • People who work in government or politics

  • Community members affected by addiction

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Steps we took when creating research questions for interviews:

  • Establish the topic we are addressing

  • Ensure the research and questions are ethical and unbiased

  • Questions should be open ended and not leading

  • Address how and why

  • Be concise

  • Have a list of ten-fifteen questions that revolve around our overarching questions

DATA ANALYSIS

Once the interviews were transcribed, we each went through and analyzed the data to find recurring themes. The themes included:

  • Individual barriers/support

  • Interpersonal barriers/support

  • Community barriers/support
