This data shows just how much the opioid crisis is affecting our community. While there isn't any data focused specifically on women who are pregnant and using opioids, this too is an increasing problem here in Muncie, as well as across the United States.
From 2014 to 2015, 280 out of 2500 babies born at the hospital in Muncie, (IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital) were diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. With 58 mothers testing positive for opioids in 2016, opioid use during pregnancy is an issue in Muncie. Understanding the community perceptions of women who use opioids during pregnancy is what our class set out to study.
